"To me a lush carpet of pine needles or spongy grass is more welcome than the most luxurious Persian rug." ~ Helen Keller
As early settlers arrived in their new homeland with few possessions, techniques for creating floorcoverings from worn clothing and other textiles was born. Local rug making techniques varied according to the materials that were available (e.g. the New England woolen mills). Rag rugs
might be handloomed, braided, or hooked depending on the skill of the
maker. Rugs tended to be utilitarian in nature and were rotated throughout the home. The rug may have begun its lifecycle as hearthrug, then moved to the kitchen, and then the back door. Even after its usefulness within the home, it may have been used
outside to cover the compost heap and thus ending its lifecycle.
