"Sewing mends the soul." ~ UnknownWomen of the 18th century were expected to be skillful with a shears to cut the cloth, as well as the needle to sew it with. Women were responsible for making and maintaining the clothes for family members, as well as the necessary items for the household such as curtains, sheets, and bedcovers. It was only when a woman might have leisure time that she might pursue the art of embroidery or marking the household items.
