Folk Art has been defined as objects produced by artists with no academic art training.  These artists have been schooled in the traditional techniques passed on to them from previous generations.  The folk artist will often use the techniques and styles of their particular region, incorporating craft traditions and social values into their work.  By definition, the works of a folk artist would exclude pieces created by professional artists and sold as fine art to wealthy patrons.  This however, is no longer the case, as witnessed by the demand of folk art (created by trained and untrained artists) by the fine art community.
