Colonial gardens were almost entirely utilitarian in nature, and their size dependent upon the size of the family.  Vegetables such as carrots, radishes, and onions were often grown in fenced areas near the house.  Those vegetables that were needed in large quantities, tended to be planted in surrounding fields.  Herbs were also grown and used freshly picked or dried.  Either way, they were utilized in cooking, for medicinal purposes, or used simply for their fragrance.




~ Early Drieds ~

Perennial herbs well known to the 18th century gardener included mint, lemon balm, lavender, thyme, yarrow, lovage, lamb's ears, garlic chives, sage, and rosemary.  Additionally, in the early Colonies, decorations were created by using natural materials at hand, such as fruits, nuts, cones, seed pods, etc.  While fresh fruits were used in decorative arrangements, nothing was every wasted.  Once dry, the fruits were kept and used year-round for decorative purposes by both the "common" folk and wealthy alike.



~ Woodland Mixture ~

Bring a bit of the woodland inside with a bowl filled with scents of the out-of-doors.  The drieds include chestnuts, acorns, pine cones, rose hips, and a generous amount of dried balsam.  You will also find mixed in...a pomegranate, a slitted orange, cinnamon sticks, star anise, bay, and a large spiced star!

~ Autumn Harvest ~

Autumn Harvest is a collection of primitive drieds, and spiced lady apples, beautifully presented in a mustard coloured box.  Three lady apples have been fashioned using a spice mixture, with a bit of stem attached.  The primitive drieds include, quince slices, chestnuts, and the flower heads of
golden yarrow.  Simply scented with early spices, it is a mixture of primitive drieds in the purest sense.  The box, which is made of papier mache, is oval in shape, and measures 5" x 7 1/2", and 3" in height.  Painted in an autumnal mustard, it has been beautifully aged and distressed, giving
it the appearance of olde wood.  The inside of the box has been finished off in a warm, cream colour.  An early-style label of a Lady Apple lies free atop the box, and the package is tied with a bit of aged string.  You may create the look that is just right for you...attach the label to the box...keep the Harvest mixture inside the box...place it into another container, and you will have an empty box for your favourite treasures!

~ Dried Spring Grass ~

Dried Spring grass is a great filler for an olde bowl...for a basket... perhaps sprinkle a bit among your folk art critters, or, you could just leave it in the bag for a primitive display.  A nubby cloth bag has been fashioned to hold one gallon of dried grass.  The bag is really stuffed full, so step back when you open it!

~ Vanilla and Spice Mixture ~


A spicy rosehip mixture with a touch of vanilla.  Each 14 ounce paper sack is chocked will cinnamon pieces, star anise, cloves, and allspice.  Fill a wooden bowl or simmer a bit of the mixture...either way it will remind you of a hot-out-of-the-oven cookie!

~ Whole Dried Pomegranates ~


Pomegranates had to be imported and were available to only those who could afford this luxury.  Pomegranates therefore became a symbol of status among the wealthiest of families.  While fresh fruits were used in decorative arrangements, nothing was every wasted.  Once dry, the fruits were kept and used year-round for decorative purposes by both the "common" folk and wealthy alike.

The best navel oranges have been slit all around the fruit and dried.  The "orangie" aroma will make your mouth water!
