"Under a spreading chestnut tree, the village smithy stands: The smith, a mighty man is he, with large and sinewy hands; And the muscles of his brawny arms, are strong as iron bands."  ~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

A blacksmith gained the title from their work with "black" metals, particularly iron.  While heating the iron, a layer of oxides forms on the surface of the metal which results in the black colour.  The blacksmith's role was to make and repair household goods, farm implements, tools, as well as iron goods for use by other tradesmenPrior to the industrial revolution, the "village smithy" was a fixture in every town.
